XXXIII - New Song
http://soundcloud.com/cogitabund/gleefully-waiting
Just 5 minutes of jamming on the guitar with a small garnish of delay in ableton and spring reverb from the amp. You can actually hear the spring rattle which should probably be looked at but meh. I can’t resist using delay in ableton I’ll wack it onto anything I can.

It’s called underground claustrophobia. Other bits of song hanging around but I’ve got to turn them into something worth uploading.

Blog XXIII - Inspiration
Firstly here’s a damn good max tutorial.
Secondly, I dunno, I don’t seem to have had the inspiration to write music these last few weeks. Everytime I try I end up just updating or modifying my damn Max patches. It’s a trifle annoying.
Tips?

Blog XXII - Delay madness
Hi,
Who knew you could create some weird sounding nonsense in max by chaining together a load of oscillators and jamming them into a tapout~ object.

Blog XXI - Max/MSP and other musicians
So, I was looking at the Max Wikipedia page and reread the list of artists who use Max to see if I recognise any of them these days. It’s still just Aphex Twin, Radiohead, Autechre and that Jamie Liddell bloke who I know really.
I have found out recently that Modeselektor and Apparat use Max/MSP when they play live. This is interesting to me because, if you have read my essay on the...

Blog XX - Soundcloud
Hi all,
Aqua is up on soundcloud. Myspace downgrades the quality too much. The visual of the track looks rubbish thus highlighting my inability to mix and master properly. If anyone has any tips I’d really love to hear them.

A demonstration of a colour tracking device I have built for my final major project at university. It is still in development and is therefore slightly buggy, but the main idea is getting there.
Very cool and mind boggling… max is an amazing program

Blog XIX - New song and stuff.
New song: here - it’s called Aqua. It reminds me of the sea crashing against a beach groin. The upload to myspace has tainted the quality somewhat. No idea why.
Also, these tracks are absolute electronic genuis. Check them out!

Blog XVII - Book 1
Evening,
new Max/Msp book has been released. €45 - £37 approx. link
The book focuses on synth building in max (LFOs, additive & subtractive synthesis etc.) so I can’t wait to delve into it. I’ve been trying to create decent synths in max for the past few months with only basic results.
New song on my myspace this evening.

Blog XVI - New max toots
Hi
Some nice shiny new toots from a chap on youtube. You can find them here. There is also a chap called metabog on youtube who has some good videos on max including the oft discussed, rarely implemented formant synthesis/vocal synthesis in max. Turns out vocal synthesis can be only a few sawtooth oscillators run through a few band pass filters with high Q with the signals added together. ...

Blog XIV - The Joys of Granular Synthesis.
Whilst I wait for the newest book on Max MSP, information about which can be found here, I have decided to play around with granular synthesis. There are some absolutely fantastic tutorials on youtube if you want to have a look. Baz tutorials and ronnie9253 have the best tutorials so go forth and explore!
Granular synthesis is very easy in max msp. Although I initially had problems with...

Blog XIII - I'm still here... somewhere.
After a pretty rubbish couple of weeks of inactivity I’ve decided to let followers of this blog know that I’m still around. The blog returned to my mind last night when, having struggled to get to sleep, I was in bed thinking about the big issues in the world today like should I buy a korg nanopad.
Never fear though, this blog was never going to be left to rot like a pumpkin on a...

Blog X - Brian Eno iPhone App
Brian Eno released an app for the iPhone called Bloom in 2008 and I’ve only just discovered it. The app allows the user to create melodies by touching the screen which are then looped and are accompanied by a soft, background synth part. The notes created by touching the screen are obviously well produced. They are punchy, as well as high in reverb and delay which is very easy to listen...

Blog IX - Generative Music patch
I did the patch up so it’s not complete nonsense and hopefully others can use it. It comes with instructions too and they seem to work. As you’ll see when you run the patch, it is very basic because I only started it two days ago. If anyone has any ideas to make it better or modifies the patch please send me a message because I’d love to see improvements/variations.
Anyway...

Blog VII - Granular Synthesis Tutorial
If, like me, you are fascinated by granular synthesis and you can’t really get your head around it, then these tutorials are for you. Provided very kindly and quickly by Ronnie9253 after a request, these tutorials should give some insight into how to build Granular Synthesis patches in Max. One could also add some effects like a delay line, comb filter or reverb at the end of the chain. ...

Blog V - Björk Live
A little non-Max oriented post. I was hopping around on the Sound on Sound website and found a fascinating insight into the arrangement of Björks concerts for the Post tour a few years back (1996 in fact).

Blog II - Cool Max sites.
Just a quick update while I arrange my next major blog entry. I’ve been trawling the internet looking for tutorials about formant/granular synthesis and I found some useful sites that I’ll share with you.
Firstly, Baz Tutorials on youtube. Some 18 very decent tutorials on Max and Jitter. The narrator is quite a comedian too! http://www.youtube.com/user/BazTutorials
Secondly, Oli Larkin’s Max...

Blog the First
My first post is a short piece chewing over some points raised by Lamberto Coccioli in an article he wrote in 2007. The article itself discusses the problems with Max/MSP and was written before Cycling 74’s big release of the new Max 5. Whilst I agree with much of what is said in the article there are some points raised which I want to discuss and give my opinions thereon. The...
